Carbon Management and the Helium Market

Warren Martin, executive director, Kansas Strong, explains why the state produces helium and where their Carbon Management industry is at.

“The main use for helium and the reason that it has such a high market demand right now and helium is worth a lot of money is it's a primary component that's used in a lot of medical equipment and medical supplies,” Martin said.

He also gave an update on the carbon management industry and its emerging potential.

“There's an interest in it," Martin said. "I will tell you that we have some, carbon capture caverns that are carbon capture fields that are being implemented here in Kansas."

"It's really kind of put a secondary business for some of our seismic friends out there that normally are trying to help us find oil and gas," Martin said. "They're spending a lot more time monitoring carbon capture fields. We also have quite a few ethanol plants here in the state that are trying to figure out ways to transfer their carbon to natural gas fields for secondary recovery efforts nearby."

He added some carbon pipeline news as well.

"And looking at pipelines, the University of Kansas is looking at and the Kansas Geological Service is looking at, our survey is looking at trying to find a way to build pipelines carbon pipelines to be able to get CO2 from ethanol plants to these fields to be able to use for secondary and tertiary recovery efforts and maybe get more life out of these fields while at the same time taking care of the carbon issue."

Martin has been very active educating and promoting the benefits of oil and gas, including tax revenues, community development projects and everyday uses for petroleum products.

"Informing the public about the many ways the Kansas oil and natural gas industry contributes to our state and our nation is an important part of our mission," Martin said. "Kansas Strong has implemented a multi-platform campaign to reach Kansans with our message. See how Kansas Strong is helping educate and inform Kansans about the critical role our industry plays."

Martin provides periodic messages dedicated to topics related to the oil & natural gas industry and how they impact our lives. He has appeared at over 200 events in the past year.

"So Kansas is a unique oil and gas producing state. We're 11th leading producing state in the nation. Yet we do not have big oil here in Kansas. We don't we do not have any of the major oil companies here. Only one that it could even slightly be considered a major oil producing company that actually does production here in the state," Martin said. "We have a lot of pipeline companies. We have a lot of refining companies. But oil and gas production is predominantly done by local, independent oil and gas producers across the state. We are almost exclusively a marginal well state."

Op/Ed: CO2 Is A Planet Saver, Not A Killer

Our friends at the CO2 Coalition have come out with a new report entitled “Nutritive Value of Plants Growing in Enhanced CO2 Concentrations (eCO2).” It is a comprehensive report very useful as a reference to counteract the humongous hyperbole of those who mistakenly view CO2 as a planet killer. The 33-page analysis is a bit technical in parts, but the Introduction and Summary are easily digested and I have included both below, along with three of my personal favorites among the outstanding graphics presented.

The concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2 ) has increased from a preindustrial value of about 280 ppm (parts per million by volume) to about 425 ppm in the year 2024.

Much of this increase has come from burning fossil fuels. Despite many years of claims that increasing concentrations of CO2 are an “existential threat” to life on Earth (a recent descriptor being “global boiling”) one cannot identify any harm that has been done. In fact, the only clear result of increasing CO2 has been an overall greening of the Earth and increasing productivity of agricultural and forest crops.

Tesla In Turmoil: The EV Meltdown In 10 Charts

In 2014, Tony Seba, an author and lecturer in “entrepreneurship, disruption, and clean energy” at Stanford University, declared, “By 2025, gasoline engine cars will be unable to compete with electric vehicles.” He continued, claiming that internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles “are toast.”

In a 14-page presentation called “Clean Disruption of Energy and Transportation,” that was subtitled, “How Silicon Valley is making oil, nuclear, natural gas, coal, electric utilities and conventional cars obsolete — by 2030,” Seba claimed “solar, wind, electric vehicles, and autonomous (self-driving) cars will disrupt and sweep away the energy industry as we know it.”

He also declared that “Transportation will never be the same again” and that “energy and transportation as we know it today will be history by 2030.”

SHARE YOUR SUSTAINABLE STORY: Jennifer Valadez nears Carbon Sequestration Thesis Finish Line

Jennifer Valadez (Crown ’24, environmental science) was always inspired to pursue a senior thesis at UC Santa Cruz. Now, in her final two quarters, Valadez is nearing the finish line on her research to better the Earth’s atmosphere.

Valadez’s research focuses on carbon sequestration and soil carbon stocks in California coastal prairie as a sustainable solution to rising carbon emissions in the atmosphere. The project assesses the carbon sequestration potential in California coastal prairie, a historically underestimated grassland ecosystem, and the role of restoration in the recovery of carbon stocks to support nature-based climate solutions. Valadez’s research is conducted at Younger Lagoon Reserve, utilizing both restored and unrestored prairie.

Valadez’s research was able to reach its fullest potential with the help of Earth Futures Institute’s Frontier Fellows Program

Piloted in spring 2022, the Frontier Fellows program funds undergraduate research for a full year, giving students a unique career-building experience. Frontier Fellows are awarded a summer training program stipend of $6000 to pursue their research, thanks to the support of multiple donors. For these students, a summer stipend allows them to focus fully on their research, rather than needing to take on a job to pay their bills.

For Valadez, the stipend alleviated stresses surrounding income over the summer, and freed up time to pursue her research interests.

“If I wasn't in the summer program and got that stipend, I would be working while trying to do the science and would have had to find a balance between those,” Valadez said. “I would have still done it, but I don’t think I would have been as involved as I got to be in my research. So it’s a great opportunity for students. I didn't have a lot of science programs growing up, so this was a way for me to live that life of being involved in science.”

The Frontier Fellows program was piloted by Astrophysics and Astronomy Professor Emerita Sandra Faber, who emphasizes the importance of funding and supporting undergraduate research opportunities.

"Engaging in research is a transformative journey within education," Faber expressed. "The Frontier Fellows program uniquely empowers undergraduates to lead impactful research endeavors, providing not only inspiration but also crucial funding and mentorship. Graduates from the Frontier Fellows program emerge well-prepared for success in their chosen fields long after their college years."

Valadez credits the Frontier Fellows program for bettering her time management skills, providing her with priceless connections with faculty, and enabling her to pursue and finish her senior thesis.

“It's completely hands on,” she said. “It's a project that you get to build up and conduct with the Frontier Fellows Program as a support system. It's really individual and you get to immerse yourself in the science. The program gave me a lot of time to really think about large ideas, tackle them, and explore all of it fully.”

After graduating in the Spring, Valadez hopes to explore a career in resource management.

Colorado pauses process to set rules for reducing 'cumulative impacts' from oil, gas operations

By the end of April, Colorado’s top regulatory agency for the oil and gas industry was expected to finish up a yearslong process meant to define how the state can consider “cumulative impacts” when approving new oil and gas development. But that process is paused for now.

Colorado lawmakers first tasked the Energy and Carbon Management Commission (ECMC) with making rules to evaluate and address cumulative impacts in 2019 – as part of the agency’s broad mission change from fostering the oil and gas industry to regulating it.

Halliburton beats profit estimates, expects international strength to continue

Oilfield services company Halliburton (HAL.N), opens new tab said on Tuesday it expects growth in its international business this year, but North American revenue will likely remain flat due to weak demand for drilling.

Oil and gas producers have been acquiring international and offshore drilling inventories amid higher oil prices, boosting prospects for equipment and services at Halliburton and rivals.

"The international market remains tight for equipment and people, and therefore we expect to see margin expansion over last year," Halliburton CEO Jeff Miller said. He expects the company's international revenue to grow in the low double-digit percentage rate this year.
