Warren Martin, executive director, Kansas Strong, reacts to the latest election results in regards to the energy industry.
“I think the election will have major ramifications, maybe not on any other industry more than the oil and gas industry, because the oil and gas industry is the economic driver that drives inflation up or drives inflation down,” Martin said. “If you have access to cheap, reliable energy, inflation goes down. If you don't, inflation goes up. If you want to go back and look at how we got into this inflation mess in the beginning, go back and just look at the headlines of the stories that were leading up to where we are today.”
Martin explains how Kansas is primarily an independent small operator oil and gas industry, and is concerned about the new methane regulations that would require and add heavy monitoring, regulation and tracking costs to their day to day.
“Every single transmission line, every single tank battery everywhere,” Martin said. “There's a connection where oil or natural gas are connected from one place to another, there would have to be monitoring equipment that would be engaged in that proximity to be able to identify how much methane is being emitted from those sites we have study after study, showing that marginal wells have nominal to no methane emissions.”
Martin continued explaining why this impacts more than most expect.
“You have 80% of the producers in the United States that are independent small producers, they only produce 20% of the oil in the United States. But 20% is a significant amount,” Martin said.
Martin believes the new methane regulations will ripple into areas not being discussed at all by the regulators.
“There are going to be oil companies that are going to go out of business when it is implemented. There are going to be wells that go out of service when it is implemented, and the real question comes into what extent?” Martin said. “And so it's not just about how much more can we expand to keep our production going and keep our production up to speed. But how much are we going to lose that we're going to have to make up for? And that's a real issue for us going forward in 2025.”
The interview also dove into what Touchdown for Teachers is, which is a program sponsored by Kansas Strong that donates $100 for each touchdown scored by the University of Kansas football team.
“So every time that the University of Kansas scores a touchdown we put $100 into a kitty, and last year, I believe it was $5,900 that we gave to a teacher,” Martin said. “So all the teachers that sign up we draw one of them out of the hat, and we gave it to a teacher last year who was a shop teacher that taught taught shop and mechanics, and they used the money to build a Hovercraft as a as a school project.”
Woodshop/CAD Teacher Mr. Michael McCullough, Yates Center High School, was presented a check in the amount of $5,400. He was the lucky teacher out of 282 teachers across Kansas who entered to win.
“So any Kansas teachers right now you can sign up and it might be drawn out and get a chance to win some money to use in your classroom any way that you want,” Martin said. “You're able to use it the way you want to use it in the classroom, but it's just a way to kind of give back to education.”
