Warren Martin, executive director, Kansas Strong, joins The Crude Life with an update on the Jayhawk State.

Martin has been very active educating and promoting the benefits of oil and gas, including tax revenues, community development projects and everyday uses for petroleum products.

"Informing the public about the many ways the Kansas oil and natural gas industry contributes to our state and our nation is an important part of our mission," Martin said. "Kansas Strong has implemented a multi-platform campaign to reach Kansans with our message. See how Kansas Strong is helping educate and inform Kansans about the critical role our industry plays."

Martin provides periodic messages dedicated to topics related to the oil & natural gas industry and how they impact our lives. He has appeared at over 200 events in the past year.

"So Kansas is a unique oil and gas producing state. We're 11th leading producing state in the nation. Yet we do not have big oil here in Kansas. We don't we do not have any of the major oil companies here. Only one that it could even slightly be considered a major oil producing company that actually does production here in the state," Martin said. "We have a lot of pipeline companies. We have a lot of refining companies. But oil and gas production is predominantly done by local, independent oil and gas producers across the state. We are almost exclusively a marginal well state."

WOMEN IN ENERGY: …On The Set Of Accidental Texan

We joke at the (virtual) U.S. Energy Media offices that we’ve “gone Hollywood.” It all started when actor and environmental activist Jeff Bridges graciously agreed to appear on the cover of the Winter 2022 edition of ENERGIES Magazine. That was followed by an inside feature in the Winter 2023 edition with Ed Begley, Jr., another actor long known for his environmental activism. And now – big announcement – writer Michele Wojciechowski talks to singer and conservationist Billy Idol for the cover of the soon to be published Spring issue of ENERGIES.

Not to be outdone, the current March/April issues of our companion publications, OILMAN and OILWOMAN Magazine, feature interviews with the cast and crew of the newly released, made in Texas movie Accidental Texan.

I first met actress AnnaClare Hicks, who plays the role of Shay Tatum, in November 2021 in a muddy field on a ranch in Bartlett, Texas, while she was filming a rig scene for Accidental Texan, the movie adaptation of the book Chocolate Lizards by Cole Thompson. With a little help from some actual roughnecks, the self-proclaimed “chameleon” was convincing as a roughneck and tool pusher in a role that few women occupy in real life.

Gamechanger: Our Fifty-Year Mission to Secure America’s Energy Independence

PETRO PROFILE: Harold Hamm Discusses His Book Gamechanger: Our Fifty-Year Mission to Secure America’s Energy Independence

Oilman Magazine columnist and contributing editor, Mark Stansberry, attended the Oklahoma City launch of Harold Hamm’s new book, Game Changer, which was held at the Hamm Institute for American Energy.

The event was entitled “Cocktails & Conversation with Harold Hamm.” Stansberry states, “Hamm discussed his book and had a Q&A session led by Alix Steel of Bloomberg Media.

The discussion of the 343-page book embraced highlights of the oil and gas industry’s past, present and future. Hamm’s book is definitely an important read for America’s energy future.”

The Grid We Need, The Grid We Have

EMERGING ENERGIES: The Grid We Need, The Grid We Have

Critical infrastructure sectors are becoming increasingly complex and interdependent and so, too, are the physical and socioeconomic landscapes in which they operate. This in turn has increased the possibility of disruptions and subsequent compounding disruptions.

Climate change adds an additional layer of uncertainty and disruption to these evolving interconnected networks. And, for the power grid, this shifting threat landscape is exacerbated by increased demand from electrification, decarbonization, population growth, and an overall increase in reliance on electricity. Climate change is also affecting energy usage patterns.

For example, Texas has seen spikes in energy demand and intense strain on the power grid from both unexpected cold snaps and intense heat waves.

TODAY IN ENERGY NEWS BRIEFS

Alaska House, seeking to boost oil and gas business, approves carbon storage bill

The Alaska House of Representatives voted Wednesday to allow companies to collect carbon dioxide and inject it deep underground. Supporters said they believe it will boost the state’s oil, coal and gas industries.

Legislators passed House Bill 50 on a bipartisan 32-8 vote, sending it to the Senate for further consideration.

Introduced by Gov. Mike Dunleavy last year, HB 50 was originally advertised as a way to generate money for the state while also reducing human-caused climate change.

Here's the latest you need to know on the Permian Basin oil and gas industry

Oil and gas continue to boom in the Permian Basin, and lately companies seem focused on increasing the ability to process or move fossil fuels, specifically natural gas, out of the region for exportation to the rest of the world.

Two separate but significant natural gas projects were announced in recent weeks. Enterprise Products Partners said April 3 it was building a natural gas processing plant in the Delaware Basin. That’s the western region of the broader Permian which straddles the Texas-New Mexico state line.

Bumper profits for oil and gas yield spare cash for moonshot climate-tech bets

Chevron Technology Ventures, the VC arm of Chevron, just closed its biggest fund to date on $500 million after the oil giant recorded its second-highest annual profit margin in a decade.

Future Energy Fund III will invest in clean energy startups with an emphasis on “long horizon bets not currently connected to our business,” the firm said. The vehicle is larger than its two predecessor funds combined.

Buoyed by a bump in crude oil prices in 2022 and accelerating production, oil and gas giants including Shell, Exxon Mobil and Aramco have prospered in recent years. Aramco, the Saudi Arabia-owned oil producer, brought in $161 billion in profit in 2022 and $121 billion in 2023—the two highest annual earnings in the company’s history.

Petrobras and China’s CNCEC to Collaborate on Oil and Gas, Renewables

Brazil’s state-run energy company Petrobras signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the China National Chemical Energy Company (CNCEC) covering several areas, especially renewable energies and energy transition.

The partnership also provides for the evaluation of potential commercial agreements in the areas of oil exploration, fertilizer production from natural gas and other sources, and production development.

Op/Ed: California’s Electricity Disaster In Seven Charts

California’s energy woes are getting worse. According to the latest numbers from the Energy Information Administration, the state’s residential electricity prices, already among the highest in America, jumped by 3 cents per kilowatt-hour last year, an increase of 11.9%. The average California homeowner now pays 28.9 cents per kilowatt-hour for electricity, which is the third-highest price in the U.S., behind only Connecticut and Hawaii.

Unfortunately, the 2023 price increases are only a hors d’oeuvre. California’s electric rates are headed for the exosphere. As I explained last March in “California Screamin,” in 2022:
