This Week In Energy: Wyoming's Energy Future Plays a Major Role for the Nation, Human Trafficking Issues Continue

Amazon Prime's Pipe Nation, Kansas State Fair, Carbon Capture, Wyoming's Energy Future, Friday Night Lights and Mental Health Issues are some of the topics discussed on This Week In Energy.

Here are the special guest and industry experts for This Week In Energy, the popular radio podcast:

Dr. John Kaszuba, SER Professor of Geology & Geophysics, Nielson Faculty Fellow, John and Jane Wold Centennial Chair in Energy, Department of Geology & Geophysics, University of Wyoming, discusses Wyoming’s energy reality and future.

John Kaszuba is the John and Jane Wold Centennial Chair in Energy and a School of Energy Resources Professor of Geology and Geophysics. A prominent expert in hydrothermal and multiphase fluid-rock reactions, Kaszuba has forged a path of excellence throughout his career, both in his research and in his dedication to student instruction. Before joining UW in 2008, Kaszuba earned his B.S. in geology from Beloit College (1982), followed by his M.S. from Virginia Tech University (1986). He later earned his Ph.D. in geochemistry from Colorado School of Mines (1997) before working as a research scientist in the Los Alamos National Laboratory for over a decade.

Since joining UW, his research has focused largely on Wyoming energy production, with extensive industry collaboration, and he has garnered an impeccable reputation as an esteemed professor. He was awarded tenure in 2012 and promoted to full professor in 2019.

During his tenure at UW, Kaszuba has continued to teach a full course load, all with an emphasis on energy education. Additionally, he supervises and leads a research group focused on a wide variety of projects regarding the geochemistry of fluid-rock interactions in the shallow to middle crust. Over 25 students have made contributions through their research in the energy sector and thrived under his tutelage and mentorship.

Joe Sinnott, CEO, Witting Partners LLC, gives an energized movie review on Friday Nights Lights. Sinnott is also the host of The Energy Detox Podcast.

"Friday Night Lights" is a raw and unflinching look at the impact of oil and gas money on small-town life and high school football. It captures the duality of the industry’s influence—both the pressures it creates and the sense of community it fosters. For oil and gas professionals, the movie serves as a reminder of the far-reaching influence of the industry, not just in economic terms but in shaping the very fabric of towns like Odessa.

Ultimately, the film’s greatest triumph lies in its depiction of Coach Gaines, whose ability to inspire and uplift his team transcends the challenges imposed by the oil-driven power dynamics of the town. "Friday Night Lights" isn't just about football; it’s about the spirit of a community and the enduring value of leadership that prioritizes character over cash.

Warren Martin, Kansas Strong: The KS Oil & Gas Resources Fund, is at the Kansas State Fair educating the masses on ethical energy

“For the next 10 days they'll be coming by our booth and I’ll be spending my nights here in the RV,” Executive Director Warren Martin said. “Our goal is to help people understand what we do, how we do it, why we do it, why, it's important to them, and why oil and gas development matters to the world.”

Kansas has a long and storied history with oil and gas, dating back to the late 1800s when the first commercial oil well was drilled.

“Education is really a key to people having a better understanding of the oil and gas industry, and also having a better understanding about our energy future,” Martin said.

Stacy Schaffer, 31:8 Project, and two special guests discuss the critical issue of human trafficking in energy communities and what are some warning signs.

The 31:8 Project's mission is to educate, advocate, and raise awareness about human trafficking. The project was created in 2015 in North Dakota, where the oil production boom led to the realization that human trafficking was present.

The 31:8 Project uses three program areas to achieve its mission: education, survivor mentorship, and bravery backpacks.

Rahul Bhatt, executive producer and director of the movie Pipe Nation, and oilfield actor Mike Vickers discuss the realities of mental health and how many working in the energy field face it everyday

Pipe Nation, which began production in 2020, was originally meant to be a television series for Netflix, but was dropped at the midnight hour due to the controversy and political issues involving Climate Change and Oil and Gas Development

During the interview with Pipe Nation producer Raoul Bhatt and actor Mike Vickers, they explain how the film was repurposed to a short film for Amazon Prime Video after they expressed an interest in the film.

The film includes real-life stories of pipe liners and addresses issues such as mental health, drug use, and sex in the industry.

The importance of staying true to the industry's reality and the need for mental health support for family-owned businesses in the supply chain was emphasized.

Additionally, a film project about a single mother working in the industry was discussed.

David LaGreca, Managing Director of Voluntary Carbon Markets Services, EcoEngineers, joins Jason Spiess and Steve Bakken on Townsquare Media’s SuperTalk 1270 Talk of the Town to share his experience working on the first voluntary carbon sequestration for ethanol in the nation.

Voluntary carbon sequestration involves the capture and storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) through various projects funded by private entities. This process aims to offset emissions by removing CO2 from the atmosphere or preventing its release. These projects often include reforestation, afforestation, and soil carbon enhancement, among others.

The Red Trail Energy (RTE) Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project represents a significant milestone in the integration of carbon capture technology within the ethanol production industry.

Located near Richardton, North Dakota, this project is a pioneering effort to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from ethanol production, making it more sustainable and competitive in markets with stringent low-carbon fuel standards.
