This Week In Energy: Energy Poverty, Landman the Series, Crude Blessing and Hamm on Carbon Management

Harold Hamm comments on the carbon pipeline investment, Warren Martin reacts to Landman the series and Joe Sinnott recaps the Marcellus' First Frac.

Here are the Special Guest, Industry Experts and Community Leaders in the episode of This Week In Energy for November 22, 2024:

One-third of humanity prepares meals over open fires or polluting stoves, contributing to premature death and limiting human potential. Anne Hyre of the Bettering Human Lives Foundation  discusses this important energy poverty issue.

“The Bettering Human Lives Foundation aims to increase access to clean cooking fuels by directly supporting local innovators and entrepreneurs to start and grow their businesses,” Hyre said. “Together, we are committed to providing families with a pathway out of poverty through access to modern energy that betters human lives.”

The launch of the Bettering Human Lives Foundation (BHL Foundation) complements Liberty Energy’s initiatives focused on alleviating poverty.

Chris Wright was nominated by president-elect Donald Trump to head the Department of Energy. Anne Hyre and Chris Wright are the executive team for the Bettering Human Lives Foundation.

“Currently, one-third of the global population relies on open fires or polluting stoves for meal preparation, contributing to poor health and premature deaths, and hindering human potential,” Hyre said. “This issue is urgent, and the foundation is committed to increasing access to clean cooking fuels.”

According to Hyre, the Bettering Human Lives Foundation aims to achieve its mission by directly supporting innovators and entrepreneurs in Africa and Asia, enabling them to establish and expand their businesses in the clean cooking sector.

“By fostering solutions at the grassroots level, the foundation seeks to empower communities and provide families with a viable pathway out of poverty through access to modern, clean energy,” she said.

Roe Patterson, author of Crude Blessings, share the story of his father’s (Glenn Patterson) rise in the energy industry.

Glenn Patterson is considered by many, if not most, one of the titans in energy. He is one of the founders of Patterson-UTI Energy and his one rig-to-riches story is often talked about by many aspiring entrepreneurs and energy enthusiasts. He passed away in 2015 at the age of 68.

He also explains how growing up in the industry shaped his work ethic and drive for entrepreneurship.

Crude Blessings: The Amazing Life Story of Glenn Patterson, American Oilman is written by Patterson’s Roe. Glenn isn’t famous, though he was successful. He didn’t accomplish great feats of endurance, work towards world peace or discover a groundbreaking scientific phenomenon. What he did do was achieve success as a businessman in the oil sector, moving beyond a poor hardscrabble existence to build, with his brother in law, a company that became one of the largest oil and gas drilling companies in America.

Now writing a book about a parent, especially one who is not world famous in our celebrity loving culture, is a tricky proposition. They can be overly gushing and uncritical at one extreme, and a harsh retribution for perceived injustices and injuries at the other. Crude Blessings, mercifully, does neither. Roe portrays his father with affection and admiration but does not leave out tales of shenanigans that Glenn got into nor descriptions of the “Patterson eruption in all its glory”, which led to some pretty interesting episodes.

Glenn Patterson was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s Disease in his early 60’s. Roe intersperses vignettes of his father coping with his disease with the narrative of his life story. It leads to a more interesting read than a chronological re-telling of events.

One aspect of the book that struck a bit of an odd note to me was the introduction of faith into the story on page 145 of a book that is just 173 pages long. In Chapter 13, Roe talks about how his father came to his faith late in life, after his diagnosis. That made sense to me, but other than a brief mention of trusting God on page 11, Roe does not discuss his mother’s strong faith or his, until late in the book when it suddenly becomes a central figure in his reflections on Glenn’s life.

Harold Hamm, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Continental Resources, after he spoke at Wildcatters Wednesday at The Petroleum Alliance of Oklahoma.

Hamm talks about the importance of synergy and collaboration in energy, education and empathy. Understanding each energy’s strengths rather than politicizing the science.

“Energy plays a tremendous role in all our lives, we know that,” Hamm said. “Finding carbon solutions is paramount for us right now.”

Joe Sinnott, CEO, Witting Partners and the host of The Energy Detox Podcast recaps the Marcellus event celebrating the anniversary of their First Frac from Range Resources

The first frac in the Marcellus was carried out by Range Resources Corporation in Washington County, Pennsylvania. This marked the beginning of large-scale development in the Marcellus Shale, a region within the Appalachian Basin known for its vast natural gas reserves.

The operation utilized horizontal drilling combined with hydraulic fracturing, a method that involves injecting fluid at high pressure to create fractures in the rock, allowing natural gas to flow more freely.

This pioneering effort demonstrated the economic viability of extracting natural gas from shale formations and sparked a boom in shale gas development across the region, significantly influencing the U.S. energy landscape

“This continues to produce tremendous amounts of gas and providing tremendous amounts of opportunities and jobs for people,” Sinnott said. “And again, like we talked about much earlier in this conversation, bettering human lives, not just here in Pennsylvania, but really throughout the country, and you know, even beyond the borders of the United States.”

Warren Martin, executive director, Kansas Strong, shares his review of Episode One of the new series Landman streaming exclusively on Paramount Plus.

In the heart of Texas, roughnecks and billionaires try to get rich quick in the oil industry; Tommy Norris, a struggling executive, tries to take his company to the top during the fuel boom.

Midland-based Tommy works for a small but lucrative outfit, MTex Oil. The owner, Fort Worth businessman Monty Miller (Jon Hamm) and his wife Cami (Demi Moore).
