Lawsuit alleges Diversified and EQT played hot potato with abandoned oil and gas well responsibility

Abandoned oil and gas wells are having a moment — as global warming agitators, public safety hazards and targets of more than $1 billion in federal funding that seeks to correct for decades of companies walking away from their deteriorating wells.

One of the companies vying for a chunk of that federal money is Diversified Energy Co., a company that owns more than 62,000 old wells, many of them inactive or abandoned across Appalachia.

Earlier this month, a group of West Virginia landowners filed a proposed class-action lawsuit suggesting Diversified isn’t part of the solution but is instead the area’s main problem.

The company has the largest collection of unplugged old wells, and its business plan relies on not having to plug most of them in the next few decades.

Oil and Gas Workers Send a Bold Warning to Other States About Newsom’s Costly Energy Policies

With Governor Newsom unwilling to listen to Californians about the increased costs and burdens created by his energy bans and mandates, the 150,000 women and men of California’s oil and gas industry are sending a warning sign to other states. Through advertisements mirroring the markets Newsom placed his own campaign ads in, industry workers want to caution others about the impacts his policies have had on California communities and their careers.

"Usually dictated by affluent communities in the state, Governor Newsom’s climate policies have become more aggressive and economically threatening to the regions struggling the most in the third most expensive state to live," said Catherine Reheis-Boyd, President and CEO, Western States Petroleum Association.

Climate crisis ‘insufficient’ to halt oil and gas exploration, says New Zealand government

New Zealand’s government has argued that the climate crisis is of “insufficient weight” to stop it issuing oil and gas exploration permits – despite declaring a climate emergency and committing to eliminate offshore exploration.

The government is in court defending its 2021 decision to allow fossil fuel companies to prospect for oil and gas in Taranaki. A group of students sued over the decision, saying the ministry failed to adequately consider the climate impact of the exploration, or give enough weight to crucial documents including advice from the climate commission and the International Energy Agency’s Net Zero By 2050 report.

ESG Reports Aren’t a Replacement for Real Sustainability

Corporate leaders face conflicting signals on the need for environmental, social, and governance reporting. A predictable backlash against ESG investing has arrived, with right wing politicians attacking ESG investors for promoting what they see as a “woke” agenda, and the SEC cracking down on “ESG-washing” by asset managers.

While more scrutiny of ESG claims is needed, corporate leaders and investors who focus solely on ESG disclosure are missing the point. ESG disclosure uses process-oriented output measures, such as whether a company has a policy on chemical management. These metrics, while necessarily broad, do not track performance. There’s a big difference between a company that has a chemicals management policy, and one that has a bio-based dye that reduces waste and water use (and cost) and creates new sales opportunities.

The Industrial Forest

Over 50% of the trees planted by government and non profits die within the first year. This wastes time and resources causing more harm than good. This also puts companies and corporations at risk for their donations.

This is another eco-issue. Luckily there is an Eco-Answer. It's The Industrial Forest

The Crude Life has become an environmental leader and is helping build a healthy, sustainable Forest that is assisting in education on how energy and environment can and will co-exist. How working together makes each other better, stronger and healthier.

Historically, Heins has been a writer on subjects ranging from broadband and the US electricity grid, to environmental, energy and regulatory topics.

Heins is also a vocal advocate of the Internet of Everything, free trade, and global issues affecting the third of our planet that still lives in abject poverty.

Heins is troubled by the Carbon Tax, Cap & Trade, Carbon Offsets and Carbon Credits, because he questions their efficacy in solving the climate problem, are too gamable by rent seekers, and are fraught with unreliable accounting.

Heins worries that climate and other environmental reporting in the US and Europe has become too politicized, ignores the essential role carbon-based energy continues to play in the lives of billions, demonizes the promise and practicality of Nuclear Energy and cheerleads for renewable energy sources that cannot solve the real world problems of scarcity and poverty.
