Zombie Wells, Wind Waste, Methane Money and Asia's Energy Investments

Will Wind Turbines Produce More Waste than Energy?

Wind turbines, once touted by the few wealthy and less populated countries as a clean solution for electricity, are now becoming an eyesore, a hazard, and a significant environmental threat.

After decades of operating around the world for the few wealthy and less populated countries, wind turbines continue to have a live expectancy of about 20 years. To date there has yet to be discovered a financially viable means of recycling those wind turbines.  As a result, today’s old wind turbines are being dumped into toxic waste dumps.

Because wind turbine blades are very difficult to recycle, the waste stream created by the retired blades is a mounting problem. Globally by 2050 projections are that there will be 43 million tons of blade waste produced EVERY YEAR -- the equivalent of 215,000 locomotives.

By the turn of the century in 2100, the world population is projected to be more than 11 billion from its current 8 billion.

New York City Headed for Rolling Hochul Blackouts

On July 14, 2023 the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) released its quarterly assessment of reliability of the bulk electric system.  The analysis found a deficit in reliability margins for the New York City area beginning in summer 2025. As a result, something must be done or there will be unacceptable risks to reliability that could cause power outages.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to understand the reasons for this finding because of the complexity of the subject.  This post includes a detailed explanation of the report and its implications.  If you want a good non-technical summary, then I recommend James Hanley’s post Get Ready for the New York City Blackout of 2025.

US to Spend $1.55B on Cutting Emissions

The U.S. government will provide up to $1.55 billion in funding to monitor and reduce methane emissions from the oil and gas sector, two agencies said on Monday.

The funding will be accompanied by technical assistance for companies to rein in emissions of the planet-warming greenhouse gas from leaks and daily operations, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said.

"The amount of methane emitted from oil and gas operations is enough to fuel millions of homes a year, and is a major driver of the climate crisis," said Joe Goffman at EPA's Office of Air and Radiation.

States will get as much as $350 million through the U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory to help companies voluntarily identify and permanently reduce methane emissions from low-producing wells.

Asian Majors Pertamina, Petronas to Pay $650m for Shell Gas Stake

Indonesian state oil company Pertamina and Malaysian counterpart Petronas signed an agreement on Tuesday to take over Anglo-Dutch oil giant Shell's stake in Indonesia's massive Masela gas block, including a project seen costing at least $19.8 billion to develop.

Under the newly signed sale and purchase agreement, Pertamina will have a 20% participating interest in the Masela block and Petronas 15%, replacing Shell's 35% stake. Japanese energy group Inpex still holds a controlling 65% interest in the block in eastern Indonesia's Maluku province.

"Apart from managing existing fields, [Pertamina] needs a strategy of developing new oil and gas fields, including the Abadi field in the Masela block," Pertamina CEO Nicke Widyawati said during the signing ceremony on the sidelines of a petroleum conference, the IPA Convention & Exhibition 2023, in Tangerang outside Jakarta, explaining why her company decided to enter the block despite initial reluctance. Pertamina is tasked by the government with increasing Indonesia's oil and gas production amid continually rising demand and import bills.
