NEWSMAKER INTERVIEW sponsored by U.S. Energy Media: Filmmaker, writer and host of National Energy Talk Mark Stansberry talks about the realities of the oil and gas industry.

“You've got to look around a little bit. Look at your roads, look at your hospitals, look at your schools,” Stansberry said. “And I like to tie in what you mentioned about agriculture, look at everything that comes to the table as far as eating and so forth. It takes a lot of energy.”

Stansberry continued his observations of how many ways petroleum products are used in modern society.

“It takes a lot of oil and gas and other forms of energy to make sure we have the necessary products from food and tools and you name it,” Stansberry said. “We have thousands of products, not just a few hundred that come from controlling chemicals and so forth, we just got to keep telling that story.”

Mark A. Stansberry is a corporate leader with extensive experience in the energy industry. He is currently a strategic energy strategist, international negotiator, and corporate advisor to boards and c-suites. He has served as Chairman/CEO of The GTD Group, and CEO/President of The Oklahoma Royalty Company. An award-winning film and music producer, columnist, radio talk show host and writer, Mark is the author of five energy-related books. He was inducted into the Western Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 2009. Mark is a frequent speaker in the oil & gas space – focusing on business development, strategic planning, new technologies, digital transformation, and operational excellence within the entire energy sector.

Stansberry was inducted into the 2022 Oklahoma Movie Hall of Fame. Mark co-founded GrayMark Productions with Academy Award winning producer Gray Frederickson in 2001. GrayMark went on to win an Emmy for a documentary and produced five featured films. Mark and Gray are currently producing a DocuFilm, Sherwood Forest.

Stansberry has testified before the US Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and other entities. Internationally, he has worked on projects in other countries, including Brazil, Bulgaria, PR China, Czech Republic, Japan, Mexico, and Russia. Domestically, he has led energy projects in over twenty states and in several energy sectors, including upstream, midstream, and downstream of the oil and gas energy sector. Stansberry has been a member of several energy associations including Association of International Petroleum Negotiators, Professional Petroleum Data Management Association, and Independent Petroleum Association of America.

Stansberry landed his first job in the Oklahoma energy industry in 1977, following college, as a landman for an oil and gas properties company, headquartered in his hometown of Elk City, OK. He graduated from Elk City High School in 1974. He was a member of the All-State Stage Band, as a guitarist. He was awarded The Elk's Lodge State "Top Boy" leadership award/scholarship, and represented the state in national competition. He has been inducted into the Elk City Leadership Hall of Fame.

In 1979, he founded a petroleum land management company, focusing on the Anadarko Basin of western Oklahoma. In 1988, he founded The Oklahoma Royalty Company, an acquisition, mergers and divestitures firm, and served as its CEO/President.

In 1991, Stansberry co-authored his first book, an energy industry handbook called “The Acquisition Process and Due Diligence: Minimize Risk/Maximize Return!” His second book, “The Braking Point: America’s Energy Dreams and Global Economic Realities,” was released in 2008, sparking a public speaking tour of universities and international energy conferences.

Other experiences include: an intern/staff of US Senator Dewey F. Bartlett, chairman of the Oklahoma Hall of Fame/Gaylord-Pickens Museum, chairman of the 2007 Governor's International Team, and member of the OKC PORT Authority.

In 1996, Stansberry was the recipient of the Junior Chamber of Commerce Ten Outstanding Young Oklahomans Award. He was the 2007 recipient of The Fund for American Studies Alumni Service Award.

WOMEN IN ENERGY sponsored by The OilWoman Magazine: How Women Pioneered Alaska’s Oil And Gas Industry

“It was an opportunity women my age could have only in Alaska,” Joey Roth, a veteran drilling engineer for Shell, says of working on the Trans-Alaska Pipeline (TAPS) in 1976. “They didn’t care if you were a woman or black or green; they just needed people to do the job.”

It’s [now] been 50 years since the number of workers on TAPS peaked at 28,000, according to the Valdez Museum History Archives, and at times women comprised as much as 10 percent of the workforce (higher than the eight percent mandated by law at the time). Thanks to the 2020 Hulu miniseries, Mrs. America, there is renewed interest in the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), ratified by Alaska April 5, 1972, which, in part, enabled these women to be part of the history-making Trans-Alaska Pipeline.

Sculptor Malcolm Alexander (1924 – 2014) illustrated the diversity of the TAPS workforce with the bronze sculpture he completed in 1980 that stood at the entrance of the Valdez Marine Terminal until 2017 when it was moved to Kelsey Dock. Comprised of five figures, the statue features a female Teamsters member as well as an Alaska Native (minorities made up 14 to 19 percent of the TAPS workforce).

EMERGING ENERGIES sponsored by The Carbon Conversation: Ethanol Plant Partnership Aims for Low-Carbon Corn

Red Trail Energy, the first ethanol plant in the nation to use carbon capture and storage, is launching a program to provide a premium price for farmers to grow low-carbon corn.

Red Trail Energy is partnering with Indigo Ag, which provides software and monitoring tools to calculate a carbon intensity score. While some farmers may need to adopt more climate-friendly practices, some may need to just provide documentation of the way they already farm.

“We’re really just in the discovery phase on how all this is going to work,” Red Trail CEO Jodi Johnson said.

ENERGY INFLUENCER sponsored by BCK9 Services :Ford Lost $65,272 For Every EV It Sold In 1Q24

Ford’s electric vehicle business is gaining speed on the highway to hell. Last week, the Dearborn-based auto giant announced its first quarter results, showing that the company lost more money in its EV segment than it made in net profit over its entire business.

During the first quarter, the company made a $1.3 billion profit on $43 billion in revenue. But it took an operating loss of $1.32 billion on its Model e business. Ford sold 20,223 EVs during the quarter, meaning it lost $65,272 for each EV. That’s a slight increase over the operating loss of $64,731 (also known as EBIT, or earnings before interest and taxes) for each EV it sold during all of 2023. But the first quarter losses are also part of a monster losing streak. As I noted here on February 7, Ford lost more money on EVs last year ($4.7 billion) than it made in net profit ($4.3 billion).

TODAY IN ENERGY NEWS BRIEFS

Gov. Polis announces major oil and gas truce in exchange for transit funding

Gov. Jared Polis on Monday announced a new truce between the oil and gas industry and environmental groups, ending the prospect of multiple ballot measures and legislative proposals related to fossil fuel production. It also proposes turning drilling into a major source of new public transit funding.

In a press briefing at the state Capitol, Democratic legislative leaders said they plan to kill a set of air quality legislation meant to reduce ozone and rein in industry air pollution. Instead, a new pair of bills will codify agency rules that cut smog-forming compounds from drilling operations into state law and establish a new fee for oil and gas production.

The agreement also ends a prospective ballot war between the oil and gas industry and environmental groups.

NMED reaches record-high million settlement in gas flaring case

A state agency reached a settlement agreement with an oil and gas company as New Mexico continues to crack down on air pollution from that sector.

The New Mexico Environment Department announced the $24.5 million settlement with Ameredev II, LLC on Monday. This is the largest settlement that NMED has ever reached for violations of regulations governing oil and gas and the majority of that money will go to the state’s general fund.

The state alleges that Ameredev flared off natural gas at five facilities between October 2018 and April 2020 because it did not have the ability to transport that gas to downstream processing facilities.
