Today In Energy: Supply Chain Impacts, Colorado Oil Ban and New Global Projections

A daily dose of some energy news for Thursday, April 4, 2024.

Supply Chain News Saw a Spike in Issues the Past Week

When supply chains run smoothly, the economies they support do too.

But when even the smallest disruption occurs, supply chains can quickly turn into the equivalent of a daisy chain — where one event sets off a cascading impact down the entire logistics value chain.

Experts fear that this is what could happen up and down the East Coast as businesses and shippers try to manage the fallout from the March 26 collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge as a result of a cargo ship collision.

According to Maryland Governor Wes Moore  port is responsible for over 51 million tons of foreign cargo. That's the largest in the country. For everybody who was buying cars, everybody who was buying farm equipment, we're the largest port in country that does that. So, this is not just impacting Maryland.”

In regards to the Energy Industry, smaller companies like RMI Supply are able to remain nimble, ready and able for new business opportunities.

“The big companies and ones involved with mergers or buyouts have an added layer of issues related to time and supply chain,” RMI Supply president Mark Workman said. “Smaller companies can make a decision in the moment, whereas a larger company can take months to make a simple decision.”

Workman explained how this can create financial impacts as well, especially considering the rate of inflation on goods and services.

“The fundamentals of logistics are playing out in front of me where I can see an increase in cargo costs coming, prompting me to make a decision now,” Workman said. “The larger companies can become so bureaucratic it’s hard on them.”

Workman added that during these supply chain impact issues the inability to make a decision will often result in the market making the decision for you and your company.

Senegal's newly elected President Bassirou Diomaye Faye addresses the audience after he took the oath of office as president during the inauguration ceremony in Dakar, Senegal April 2, 2024.

Senegal's Newly Elected President Announces Audit of Oil, Gas and Mining Sectors

Faye defeated the ruling coalition's candidate in a March election by a landslide, reflecting high hopes for change in the country of around 18 million.

The audit is one of the first policy moves announced since the 44-year-old former tax inspector's inauguration on Tuesday.

"The exploitation of our natural resources, which according to the constitution belong to the people, will receive particular attention from my government," he said.

"I will proceed with the disclosure of the effective ownership of extractive companies (and) with an audit of the mining, oil, and gas sector."

From Corporate to Startup: Melanie Adams’ Journey in Revolutionizing Women’s Workwear

Imagine standing in the middle of your favorite gas plant in picturesque Moab, Utah, its colossal engines humming with power. And you’ve just completed an environmental, health and safety (EH&S) audit, surrounded by a fractionation unit, sulfur recovery unit, helium processing plant, incinerator and flare. This was my reality, delving into the intricate world of energy facilities, learning from remarkable individuals who dedicated their lives to powering the world.

However, the narrative takes a turn when, after the audit, my boss and colleagues – all men – decide to break for lunch at a local Mexican restaurant. Clad in oversized, frumpy coveralls adorned with a square name patch, I was told I looked like a HVAC mechanic instead of a lunch patron.

Now, that is fine if that is your job, but that was not my job; I was an air quality specialist at the time. Fortunately, I was able to change my look before we walked into the restaurant by unzipping my coverall halfway and tying it around my waist and at least having a “normal” women’s shirt on the top half. The discomfort and humiliation of that day led me to question the options for personal protective equipment (PPE) designed for women in industrial roles. I looked and looked and there was really nothing other than garments claiming to be for women; I mean, there was a pink button front shirt with some darts. That had to be good enough, right? That was 2007.

World Set to Quadruple Oil and Gas Production by 2030, led by New US Projects

According to the new report by Global Energy Monitor, a San Francisco-based NGO, last year, at least 20 oil and gas fields were readied and approved for extraction following discovery, sanctioning the removal of 8bn barrels of oil equivalent. By the end of this decade, the report found, the fossil-fuel industry aims to sanction nearly four times this amount – 31bn barrels of oil equivalent – across 64 additional new oil and gas fields.

The US, which has produced more crude oil than any country has ever done in history for the past six years in a row, led the way in new oil and gas projects in 2022 and 2023, the report found. Guyana was second, with countries in the Americas accounting for 40% of all new oil sanctioned in the past two years.

Feds Ban New Oil and Gas Development on Swath of Colorado Land

More than a decade of advocacy by a broad coalition of Colorado conservationists, ranchers, local governments and recreationists paid off Wednesday when federal officials banned new oil and gas development on 347 square miles of public land for the next 20 years.

U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland withdrew a broad swath of Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service land from eligibility for future oil, gas and mineral development. The land makes up the Thompson Divide in central Colorado, and Wednesday’s decision does not affect permits or leases that have already been approved.

The decision was a historic win for the coalition of diverse interests that has advocated for the protections for more than 15 years.

“This mineral withdrawal will provide much deserved and long-lasting protection to the Thompson Divide, an area filled with immense aspen groves, vast roadless lands, community watersheds and rich wildlife habitat,” said Will Roush, executive director of Carbondale-based Wilderness Workshop, in a news release. “Preserving this ecologically intact ecosystem reflects the will of local communities and is critical for the state’s biological connectivity and biodiversity.”

The Thompson Divide is a rugged stretch of canyons, mountains, foothills and broad valleys that stretches south from Glenwood Springs to Crested Butte. The newly protected land lies west of the Maroon Bells-Snowmass and Raggeds wilderness areas.

It touches four counties — Pitkin, Delta, Gunnison and Garfield — and encompasses the headwaters of the North Fork of the Gunnison River and the aspen grove along Kebler Pass, one of the largest in the state.
