This Week In Energy for March 31, 2024

Energy Day in Colorado at the state capitol, community solar and carbon storage solutions.

In the episode of This Week In Energy for March 31, 2024:

The Colorado Oil & Gas Association President & CEO, Dan Haley, testified Thursday in opposition to Senate Bill 159, which would effectively ban all oil and gas development, driving the industry out of Colorado.

SB 159, also known as ‘The Ban Bill’, would cease the issuing of new oil and gas permits after January 1, 2030. The bill would also apply to permits needed to modify old wells to increase production. Wells falling under permits issued between the enactment of the bill and January 1, 2030, must begin drilling before the end of 2032.

Kelly Marshall, energy ambassador and creative director, gives an update from Colorado and their Energy Day at the Capitol.

“Well, they started across the street and we were politely asked to leave that venue because the group was a little too boisterous for that closed area,” Marshall said. “So we went across the street to the Capitol steps.”

She explained that leadership members Dan Haley, Colorado Oil and Gas Association president and CEO, Kim McHugh, COGA board chair and vice president of the Chevron Corp. Rockies Business Unit, and Kait Schwartz, the American Petroleum Institute Colorado director made speeches to the crowd.

Clint Kling of Shepherd VR joins TownSquare Media KLXX 1270AM’s Talk of the Town with Steve Bakken and special guest co-host Jason Spiess.

The interview stems around a discussion on how Toyota and several police departments are integrating VR Training into their HR, safety and overall culture.

“I mean a lot of my university research was based on assessing effectiveness in training just because everybody said VR was better,” Kling said. “Nobody really had any hard data. I spent a year and a half or so setting up experiments and running them and basically showcasing what is effective training and as far as VR goes, what's effective training as far as our traditional methods go. So VR definitely has taken leaps and bounds on the effectiveness of the training.”

Toyota Motor of North America produced and developed a VR experience that teaches team members about assessing risks associated with new equipment on the factory floor. Kling discussed how this translates into other areas of heavy industry and manufacturing training.

“So in that environment we ended up designing an open pit mining scenario so you know when you put on the goggles you're basically transported from the classroom into the open pit environment,” Kling said. “Everything's adjusted to scale so everything looks like it should if you were on that site. So the equipment sizes, the high wall sizes, we had a conveyor crusher units presented in a kind of a real life scale.”

“I'm sitting today in the heart of the Marcellus in the heart of Appalachia that is just outside of Pittsburgh,” Witting Partners CEO and The Energy Detox Podcast host Joe Sinnott said.

Sinnott recently celebrated a 4-year anniversary for his podcast The Energy Detox. In addition, Sinnott was active in the month of March promoting World Shale Energy Day and promoting clean energy at public events.

“Although shale energy development has created countless worldwide winners, only one person won the 2024 #WorldShaleEnergyDay sweepstakes,” Sinnort said during one of his podcasts this month. “That being said, this LIVE episode of The Energy Detox kicks off by drawing that lucky winner.”

During a special Live Broadcast Podcast, Sinnott draws the name John Roberts of Englewood, Colorado as the winner of The Energy Detox Podcast World Shale Energy Day giveaway.

Carbon Pipeline are the Talk of the Town. Host Steve Bakken and pipeline Engineer Curtis Jundt talk about Carbon Pipelines and Carbon Sequestration.

Curtis raises concerns about the impact on corn yields and the need for more fertilizers and water if CO2 is sequestered. He also discusses safety hazards of carbon transportation and storage, as well as the denial of permits for a CO2 pipeline.

Curtis questions the involvement of companies like Halliburton and Schlumberger in carbon sequestration science and expresses concerns about potential faults in the Broom Creek formation and unknown factors of CO2 storage.

The reliability of current science and potential unintended consequences of long-term CO2 sequestration are also questioned. He also address safety concerns and develop mitigation plans for carbon transportation and storage.

“You’re not only increasing the risk of a third-party strike,” he says, “but you have now added a considerable expense to all of our development East and West.

On Feb. 22, 2020, a pipeline burst in Mississippi. First Responders testified about the event at the Linton this year. According to those first responders, the most dangerous plume traveled 3 miles away — causing many drivers to lose consciousness.

“Within two miles of this proposed pipeline, which is just north and east of Bismarck, in two miles of Burleigh County, North Dakota, there are 1,247 homes,” former Bismarck mayor Dr. John Warford said. “This pipeline should be moved as far from Bismarck as we can get it to be moved.”
