Biden Orders 20-year Ban on Drilling Near Tribal Site, Prevents Native American Energy Empowerment

Hundreds of square miles in New Mexico will be withdrawn from further oil and gas production for the next 20 years on the outskirts of Chaco Culture National Historical Park that tribal communities consider sacred, the Biden administration ordered Friday.

The new order from Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland applies to public lands and associated mineral rights within a 10-mile (16-kilometer) radius of the park. It does not apply to entities that are privately, state- or tribal-owned. Existing leases won't be impacted either.

A World Heritage site, Chaco Culture National Historical Park is thought to be the center of what was once a hub of Indigenous civilization, with many tribes from the Southwest tracing their roots to the high desert outpost.

After extensive studies and consultations, the plan has pitted the Navajo Nation against other tribes in the region amid concerns about economic impacts and that individual Navajo allotment owners may be left landlocked by restrictions on public land.

"Today marks an important step in fulfilling President Biden's commitments to Indian Country, by protecting Chaco Canyon, a sacred place that holds deep meaning for the Indigenous peoples whose ancestors have called this place home since time immemorial," Haaland said in a statement. "I value and appreciate the many Tribal leaders, elected officials, and stakeholders who have persisted in their work to conserve this special area."

Oil Gas Leases Opening in Ohio

The commission in charge of leasing mineral rights on state land in Ohio has begun accepting applications. They’ve already received eight proposals, and the commission plans to post the applications once they’ve reviewed them.

Lawmakers set up the Oil and Gas Land Management Commission more than a decade ago. They charged the five-member commission with overseeing the leasing of state land for oil and gas exploration. But then-Governor John Kasich never appointed members to the board.

The commission for the most part languished until lawmakers got to work on a “chicken bill” late last year.

That proposal began as a humble tweak to the minimum number of poultry livestock Ohioans can purchase. The sponsor, then-state Rep. Kyle Koehler, R-Springfield, wanted to lower the number so kids in 4H didn’t wind up purchasing more animals than they needed. But that measure became the vehicle for a wide range of amendments including one related to oil and gas leasing.

Third Gen Energy Company Opens Their Doors

An expensive purchase by a local family-owned workover and drilling company is increasing the company’s ability to service its customers and provide employment.

Third-generation family business Moncla Workover and Drilling serves the oil and gas industry in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi. The company has recently purchased nine new land rigs. With this purchase, the company hopes to expand their services all while providing employment and income to families in Acadiana.

Matt Moncla is a managing partner with Moncla Workover and Drilling, and he says, “With nine rigs you will have at least 45 jobs and that’s just in the field. We will also need administrative help.”

Moncla also expressed his wish to make sure people were not intimidated from applying due to a lack of experience in the field. Moncla says the company makes sure to bring in new employees and train them thoroughly so they will feel comfortable on the job.
