The Crude Life Week In Review Episode 554: Celebrating Women's History, API Chili, Marcellus Update and VR Increasing in Industry

Plus Juice The Docuseries, Carbon Capture and ESG impacts.

The Crude Life Week In Review Episode 554 is currently airing across a 5-state radio network. Here are the industry experts, community leaders and special guests for The Crude Life Week In Review Episode 554:

CELEBRATING WOMEN HISTORY:  Tara Rasmuson sat down with host Jason Spiess to discuss her journey from petroleum to publishing.  Tara was a landman (aka landwoman …. aka land negotiator) while working in oil and gas. Now she is the publisher of the Greeley Lifestyle Magazine.

“I started out at the bottom answering phones in the oil and gas industry,” Tara said. “I really just worked my way up.  I studied Petroleum Land Management at Oklahoma City University.  I then got an internship with a little group called Tekton Energy in Highlands Ranch and they had a project here in Windsor Colorado.”

Windsor is just a “stones throw” away from Greeley, which is the home rule municipality city that is the county seat and the most populous municipality of Weld County.  Weld County hosts approximately 20,000 well pads or active well sites and producing roughly 85-90% of Colorado’s oil development.

Before Tara’s internship and work answering phones, she absorbed a respect for the industry through her geography and father’s profession.

“I actually grew up in the industry, my dad’s a geologist, so I watched my entire life the ups and the downs of the industry,” Tara said. “I saw a lot of people leave and I felt really sad when they had to leave oil and gas.  But now I feel so much gratitude having now transiting out of the oil and gas industry, now I can look at it from a different lens.”

CELEBRATING WOMEN HISTORY: Carolina Ortega, vice president of sustainability, Milestone Environmental Services, talks about the integration of energy, environment and carbon. The conversation begins with separating Sustainability and ESG (Environmental Social Governance).

“Think about when you go to the doctor, and the doctor takes your cholesterol level, and they take your blood pressure, and they take your different levels of vitamin D, and they just do a blood test, and they come up with all these metrics, all these numbers on your health, right?” Ortega said. “Those metrics, I kind of make a parallel with ESG.”

Using oil and gas as a backdrop, Carolina explains how sustainability strategies are becoming more accepted everyday.

“When you're able to tell a story about how a company is welcomed by local communities when it sets up its operations, that is sustainability,” Ortega said. “It's long-term value creation. It's long-term risk management. And that's the big difference.”

SPECIAL FEATURE: Clint Kling, Shepherd VR, explains why Virtual Reality training is becoming more popular in industry.

“We are pioneers of enhanced learning experiences. Leveraging our unique Functional Integral Training , or FIT methodology,” Kling said. “Our VR modules have been designed to surpass traditional methods and other VR offerings in terms of efficiency and effectiveness.”

Our immersive training modules empower learners with lifelike experiences that facilitate superior knowledge transfer, bridging the virtual-real world divide seamlessly.

“With Shepherd VR, training is not just immersive but also impactful, shaping the future of learning and performance in the real world,” Kling said.

INDUSTRY EXPERT:  Energy Expert Robert Bryce gives the rundown on Juice The Docuseries.

The five-part docuseries, Juice: Power, Politics & The Grid, is now available for free on YouTube. Rather than make a feature-length film, Bryce said they decided to make the content as user-friendly as possible, so broke it into five episodes, each lasting about 20 minutes.

The series features 34 interviews that were shot in Texas, Japan, Vermont, Oklahoma, Colorado, California, Washington D.C., Illinois, Egypt, and England. The cast of characters includes many of the world’s top thought leaders on energy, including political scientist Roger Pielke Jr., Grid Brief editor Emmet Penney, civil rights leader Jennifer Hernandez, author Michael Shellenberger, Canadian nuclear activist Chris Keefer, author Meredith Angwin, former IEA director Nobuo Tanaka, World Nuclear Association director Sama Bilbao, Campaign for a Green Nuclear Deal founder Madi Hilly, and many others.

Bryce said he is especially proud of Episode 3, which features the Osage tribe’s battle with Enel over a wind project the company built by violating the tribe’s sovereignty.

I have been covering this issue for more than four years, so I was thrilled last month when a federal court judge in Tulsa ordered Enel to remove all 84 of the turbines it built in Osage County," Bryce said. "It’s a landmark ruling and an enormous embarrassment for Big Wind and Enel, a company that has endlessly touted its 'green' credentials."

ENERGY EXPERTJoe Sinnott, CEO, Witting Partners and the host of The Energy Detox Podcast talks about how industry mergers, cabin fever, March Madness and culture clashes can impact the workplace.

As organizations diversify, workplace cultures may clash, leading to conflicts and reduced collaboration.

“And, you know, a lot of times people are unwittingly, you know, damaging some of that trust or creating more separation between them and their stakeholders than they realize,” Sinnott said. “So, you know, that's the first challenge for people is, hey, what are all the ways you might accidentally, unwittingly be causing a bit of mistrust?”

Witting Partners helps energy industry leaders achieve and sustain peak performance by combining an unmatched blend of oil & gas experience, insight, and results with the power of leadership coaching, workshops, and keynotes so that you and your stakeholders don't un-wittingly damage your odds of achieving long-term success.

The 43rd Annual API Chili Cook-off will be held Saturday, March 23, 2024 at the Raymond Family Community Center. This is one of two major fundraising activities for the Williston Basin API Chapter. Proceeds from our 2023 fundraisers were used to fund numerous other groups and activities in the local and surrounding communities.

The three run down different styles of chili from Cincinnati to Kansas City to Texas to Norwegian.

“I shouldn't say it's completely new but it (new styles) is really showing up in the last decade or so because prior to that our oil industry was largely homegrown,” Monte said. “We had a few people move in and out but during the the recent booms we have had people move in companies move in from all over the country so they brought a lot of their their home cuisine with them and that's been great you can you can have any any kind of chili you want from five alarm to you know what i call Norwegian chili.”
