The Crude Life Podcast: Sinnott Gives an Update on the Shell Cracker Plant and Talks Mental Health

Shells is facing some public relations issues from local environmentalists and oil and gas industry mental health is discussed in detail.

Joe Sinnott, Witting Partners and host of the Energy Detox Podcast, joins The Crude Life founder Jason Spiess to talk about how mental health is part of the oil and gas industry.

From the early days of “throwing some dirt” on your mental health issues to actual programs companies are installing into their company culture.

Sinnott and Spiess also discuss the mental health impacts of a company “using” an employee for marketing purposes – i.e. Women’s History Month or Minority Month.  Themed months can become a tricky employment marketing plan as highlighting someone’s interests, genders and cultures once a year can open up new conversations for the other 11 months of the year.

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices

Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed in May in the United States since 1949. The month is observed with media, local events, and film screenings. Mental Health Awareness Month began in the United States in 1949 and was started by the Mental Health America organization.

The Crude Life celebrates and honors all struggling with personal demons and those attempting to better their mind, body and soul.  All energy has a purpose and we are all energy.

Sinnott gives a boots-on-the-ground update from the Marcellus Utica with an update on the Shell Ethane Cracker Plant.

Sinnott said despite efforts of transparency and communication, the plant is facing some PR hurdles with flaring and environmental activists. (The day after the interview with Sinnott, Shell was served legal papers and was sued by a local environmental group.)

The “cracker” plant, located along the Ohio River about 30 miles (48 kilometers) outside Pittsburgh, opened in November and uses ethane from a vast shale gas reservoir underneath Pennsylvania and surrounding states to makes polyethylene, a plastic used in everything from consumer and food packaging to tires.

Clean Air Council, it alleges that operator Shell Chemical Appalachia LLC, a subsidiary of British oil and gas giant Shell plc, is violating state and federal limits on smog, as well as emissions limits in its state-approved operating plan.

The company had projected to spend $6 billion on the refinery, which took years to build. At full capacity, the plant is expected to produce 3.5 billion pounds (1.6 billion kilograms) of polyethylene annually.

Witting Partners helps energy industry leaders achieve and sustain peak performance by combining an unmatched blend of oil & gas experience, insight, and results with the power of leadership coaching, workshops, and keynotes so that you and your stakeholders don’t un-wittingly damage your odds of achieving long-term success.

Sinnott has been a resource for the industry with over 15 years of proven success stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to Appalachia, from service company to operator, and from drilling rig to downtown boardroom. For more info on Sinnott, visit his website or LinkedIn Profile Page.
