Monte Besler the FracN8R and Chili are the Talk of the Town

The 43rd Annual API Chili Cook Off in the Bakken is the "Grand Daddy" of cookoffs in the Williston Basin.

Monte Besler, FRACN8R, joined TownSquare Media KLXX-AM SuperTalk 1270 Talk of the Town with Steve Bakken and guest co-host Jason Spiess.

The 43rd Annual API Chili Cook-off will be held Saturday, March 23, 2024 at the Raymond Family Community Center. This is one of two major fundraising activities for the Williston Basin API Chapter. Proceeds from our 2023 fundraisers were used to fund numerous other groups and activities in the local and surrounding communities.

The three run down different styles of chili from Cincinnati to Kansas City to Texas to Norwegian.

“I shouldn't say it's completely new but it (new styles) is really showing up in the last decade or so because prior to that our oil industry was largely homegrown,” Monte said. “We had a few people move in and out but during the the recent booms we have had people move in companies move in from all over the country so they brought a lot of their their home cuisine with them and that's been great you can you can have any any kind of chili you want from five alarm to you know what i call Norwegian chili.”

The debate of whether Beans are allowed in true chili or not as well as soupy hot dog chili. There was a brief discussion of cinnamon chili and spaghetti noodles.

“The first time I heard of spaghetti noodles with your chili I thought someone was pulling my leg,” Spiess said.

Hatch chilis, chocolate and pork shoulder are also discussed in the chili conversation.

The chili cookoff is one of two major fundraising activities for the Williston Basin API Chapter. Proceeds from our 2023 fundraisers were used to fund multiple organizations.

The following are just a few of the 2023 donations:  Miss North Dakota Organization, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Boys Scouts of America, The Salvation Army, WHS Close Up, Operation Graduation, Christmas for Kids, Make-A-Wish Foundation of ND, American Cancer Society, Great Plains Food Bank, Feed My Starving Children, Family Crisis Shelter, Marketplace for Kids, Williston Parks & Rec., Upper Missouri Relay for Life, March of Dimes, Opportunity Foundation, Williston Police Dept., OWTA, Williston Curling Club, Boys, and Girls Ranch, Bras for a Cause, Upper Missouri Ministries, Military Affairs Golf Tournament, WSC endowments,  WSC Alethic Teams and many more!   

The chili cookoff has set up levels of donation recognition, they are as follows:

  • Bronze ($100) – Your company’s logo will be displayed on a PowerPoint presentation at the Chili Cook-Off. 

  • Silver ($200) – Everything included in the Bronze level and advertising on the website.

  • Gold ($350) – Everything included in the Silver sponsorship and your company will be announced during the event.

  • Diamond ($500) – Everything included in the Gold Sponsorship and listed on the official poster.

  • Platinum ($750) – Everything included in the Diamond Sponsorship along with pre-event radio advertisement. 

  • Black Gold ($1,000) – Everything included in the Platinum Sponsorship and announced during the chili games.

  • Bakken Trophy/Games ($1,500) – Everything included in the Black Gold Sponsorship and announced during the games and announced during the trophy presentations. 

  • Bakken Rockstar ($2,500) – Everything included on the Bakken Trophy/Games sponsor and announced throughout the day. 

*Marketing Deadlines: March 3, 2024 – Official Poster, Radio Ads, and Herald Ad; March 15, 2024 - PowerPoint. All donations received after the deadline dates will be included in the Post-Event Thank You advertising. (If we don’t have your logo, we will advertise your company name)
