Methane Task Force, New UK Oil Permits, Ethical Energy and BP Investing Huge In Oil and Gas

The Crude Life Daily Update for August 2, 2023.

The Biden administration has created a new cabinet-level Methane Task Force to accelerate emissions reductions from the oil and gas industry.

The announcement was part of the first-ever White House Methane Summit held last week. Methane, the primary component of natural gas, is a potent greenhouse gas with 80 times the near-term warming potential of carbon dioxide.

The task force is targeting abandoned or “orphaned” oil and gas wells, along with the United States’ roughly 3 million-mile natural gas pipeline network, in order to reduce leakage of methane into the atmosphere.

Shapps: It’s Irresponsible Not to Grant Oil and Gas Licenses

It would be "irresponsible" not to grant new oil and gas licences in the North Sea, Grant Shapps has said.

The Energy Security Secretary pointed out that expanding the licences aligns with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's goals of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Shapps stressed that securing these licenses is both compatible with the nation's energy needs and a crucial step towards meeting climate objectives, making it a sensible and rational decision.

Coming Fall 2023, A Decade of Discussion by Jason Spiess

Rishi Sunak is right to hedge his bets on oil and gas

It is quite right that the Prime Minister has chosen to approve new licences for oil and gas extraction in the North Sea, in spite of the bitter reaction from climate activists, the Labour party – and some of his own MPs.

Chris Skidmore, who just recently completed a review of net zero policies on behalf of the government, said this week that the decision to award new licences ‘is on the wrong side of the future economy that will be founded on renewable and clean industries and not fossil fuels’.

Yet the Prime Minister is not retrenching on investment in renewable energy; he is hedging the government’s bets. While wind and solar already play a large role in electricity generation in Britain, their contribution to the United Kingdom’s total energy needs remains in single figures. It is certain that fossil fuels will remain a large part of the nation’s energy mix in the short to medium term, and far from certain that they will not continue...

BP Invested 11 Times More Money into Oil and Gas than Renewables

BP invested 11 times more money on oil and gas than it did on low-carbon energy in the last quarter, an analysis has found.

The oil giant put £1.7bn into oil and gas, compared to just £148m invested in hydrogen and “renewables [and] power” in the three months to June. It made around £2bn in that time period.

The investment in low-carbon may include research and development, infrastructure or buying existing plants.

A Sharp Drop in Oil and Gas Earnings could Reshape the Energy Industry

Western oil majors reported drops in second-quarter earnings of about 50% compared to the same period last year, when Russia’s invasion of Ukraine sent oil and gas prices soaring and pushed profits to record levels. Even with profits remaining high by historical standards, the sharp drop could reshape the companies’ renewable energy production plans.

We’ve collected reporting and analysis on what the drop in earnings means for the oil and gas industry.
