The Wonderful Flavorful World of Wood for BBQ Smoking

When it comes to BBQ smoking, the choice of wood plays a vital role in infusing delightful flavors into your meats. Each type of wood imparts a distinct taste and aroma, allowing you to create a customized experience for your palate. In this article, we'll delve into the different types of wood commonly used for BBQ smoking and explore their unique flavor profiles.

1. Mesquite:

Mesquite is renowned for its strong, earthy flavor that can be overpowering if used excessively. It burns hot and fast, making it suitable for quick-cooking meats like beef and game. The intense smokiness of mesquite adds a robust and slightly sweet taste to your BBQ, making it a popular choice for traditional Texas-style barbecues.

2. Hickory:

Hickory is one of the most popular woods for BBQ smoking, known for its strong, rich, and bacon-like flavor. It pairs exceptionally well with pork, ribs, and chicken, enhancing their natural flavors. Hickory smoke delivers a sweet and smoky taste that is both savory and slightly pungent, giving your meats a classic BBQ appeal.

3. Apple:

Apple wood offers a mild and fruity smoke, making it ideal for delicate meats such as poultry, pork, and fish. It imparts a slightly sweet and tangy flavor, enhancing the natural juiciness of the meat. Apple smoke provides a subtle, well-rounded taste, adding a touch of sweetness without overpowering the meat's inherent flavors.

4. Cherry:

Cherry wood offers a subtly sweet and fruity smoke, lending a beautiful reddish hue to your meats. It pairs exceptionally well with pork, beef, and game, infusing a mildly sweet, tangy, and aromatic flavor. Cherry smoke adds a pleasant depth to your BBQ, making it a popular choice for creating a balance between sweetness and smokiness.

5. Oak:

Oak is a versatile wood that provides a medium smokiness and a robust flavor that complements a wide range of meats. It burns slowly and evenly, making it suitable for long smoking sessions. Oak smoke delivers a well-rounded taste, with a mild sweetness and a hint of nuttiness. It is a popular choice for brisket, ribs, and other red meats.

6. Pecan:

Pecan wood offers a subtle and sweet flavor profile, similar to hickory but milder. It works well with a variety of meats, including poultry, pork, and fish. Pecan smoke provides a delicate nuttiness and a slightly fruity undertone, enhancing the overall taste of your BBQ without overpowering it.

7. Maple:

Maple wood is known for its mellow and slightly sweet flavor, which adds a hint of caramelization to your meats. It is a popular choice for poultry, ham, and vegetables, imparting a gentle smokiness with a touch of sweetness. Maple smoke creates a harmonious balance of flavors, resulting in a delightful BBQ experience.

Selecting the right type of wood for BBQ smoking can elevate your culinary creations to new heights.

Whether you prefer the robustness of mesquite, the bacon-like richness of hickory, or the subtlety of fruitwoods like apple and cherry, experimenting with different wood flavors allows you to tailor your BBQ to your personal taste preferences.

So, fire up your smoker, choose your favorite wood, and embark on a flavorful journey that will tantalize your senses and impress your guests. =

Oil and Natural Gas Prices Rise After Weekend of Turmoil in Russia

Oil and natural gas prices climbed Monday, while wheat prices briefly spiked higher, as investors reacted to the weekend’s brief and chaotic insurrection in Russia.

Markets were largely focused on whether the turmoil in Moscow could disrupt global commodity supplies. Russia is the world’s second biggest exporter of oil, and the world’s biggest exporter of wheat.

US crude oil futures briefly climbed 1.3%, before trading up 0.8% by 12.15 p.m. ET. Brent crude, the international benchmark, gained 0.7%. Both contracts lost nearly 4% last week.

How Much Would it Cost Oil and Gas Firms to Cut Methane Leaks?

Halting methane releases is one of the most effective ways for the oil and gas industry to combat climate change. An International Energy Agency report released Tuesday also suggests it’s one of the cheapest.

If the industry spent $75 billion — roughly equivalent to 2% of 2022 net income — to curb releases of methane through 2030, that would keep the sector on a pathway to achieve net zero emissions by midcentury, according to the International Energy Agency.

“The oil and gas industry must lead efforts to tackle methane emissions by adopting a zero-tolerance approach” to leaks and intentional releases of the potent greenhouse gas, the Paris-based organization said in a report released Tuesday. “Methane abatement in the oil and gas industry is one of the cheapest options to reduce GHG emissions anywhere in the economy.”

Although governments increasingly support slashing methane releases from the energy sector, the report found that “overall progress has been much too slow, despite the record profits that the oil and gas industry saw in 2022.”

Dallas Federal Reserve Takes Temperature of Oil and Gas industry

The Dallas Federal Reserve Bank doesn’t just keep an eye on interest rates. It also checks in with the oil and gas industry.

Matt Smith, lead oil analyst for the Americas at Kpler, joined the Standard and said the Dallas Fed’s quarterly survey of the industry compares not just their yearly activity, but the previous quarter as well.

“the average response was $77 they’re expecting for the end of the year. But you do have to bear in mind that currently we’re around just under $70 and the survey is also of oil and gas firms, so you would expect them to be having this more optimistic view,” Smith said. “That said, their view last quarter was that it would be a little bit higher at $79.50. So a little bit more pessimism there.”

He commented on Natural Gas too.

“In terms of the natural gas side of things, expectations are that we’ll see it just under $3 in MMBtu. And so that’s just kind of showing where we are now,” Smith said. “But again, that’s down from their view from last month. So a little bit of pessimism in the oil and gas patch here.”
