Today In Energy News Radio Minute (Audio Above)

Lori Hinz, news reporter for BEK News, gives an update from the research on her carbon pipeline feature named Capturing America’s Heartland: CO2 Pipeline, which airs on BEK TV.

Hinz recites a recent Carbon Pipeline Resolution passed by the North Dakota Republican Party at their recent convention.

“This is number seven resolution opposing carbon capture and storage, CCS, supporting private property rights and condemning the use of eminent domain for CO2 pipelines from the NDGOP resolutions committee,” Hinz said. “And this is how it reads.”

Whereas corporations with the energy sector are capitalizing on the false premise of a looming climate apocalypse by introducing CCS projects into North Dakota, which would require the acquisition of land across various states, affecting numerous landowners and communities.

An eminent domain is being considered to acquire the necessary land for the pipeline.

And whereas the affected landowners and communities have expressed strong opposition to the use of eminent domain, arguing that it unjustly benefits a private entity at the expense of their property rights and local autonomy, demonstrating that there is a need for greater transparency, community involvement, and rigorous environmental and safety assessments in the planning and implementation of large scale infrastructure projects.

An eminent domain is being considered to acquire the necessary land for the pipeline.

And whereas the affected landowners and communities have expressed strong opposition to the use of eminent domain, arguing that it unjustly benefits a private entity at the expense of their property rights and local autonomy, demonstrating that there is a need for greater transparency, community involvement,

and rigorous environmental and safety assessments in the planning and implementation of large scale infrastructure projects.

And whereas the North Dakota Republican Party supports the right of individual citizens to own and benefit from private real property ownership and further affirms that the individual's right of ownership should be the primary purpose inherent in the use and value of their real property and

Whereas the Fifth Amendment to the U.S.

Constitution protects private property from public use without just compensation, and whereas there are substantial unanswered questions about the environmental benefits of these projects, their associated risks, and the long-term viability of CCS technology,

Now, therefore, be it resolved that the North Dakota Republican Party condemns the use of eminent domain for carbon dioxide pipelines and calls for an immediate halt to any such actions.

WOMEN IN ENERGY: Texas Actress AnnaClare Hicks Strikes Oil

Twenty-five years ago, when Abilene, Texas, author Cole Thompson wrote his first novel, Chocolate Lizards – loosely based on some of his own experiences working in the oilfield – he, admittedly, was in his “good ol’ boy” period.

Not only could he not have envisioned that a quarter of a century later the film adaptation of his book would make it to the big screen, it never would have occurred to him that one of the main characters – a roughneck named Shay Tatum – would be played by a woman.

Fortunately, Abilene screenwriter and producer Julie B. Denny, who had owned the rights to the movie for years, had other ideas.

The energy and filmmaking industries are both male dominated and Denny says, “I tried to keep it as close to the novel as possible, but I shifted the events of the story around a bit and womanized the world more. It was such a male-dominated story and I wanted to find an angle that would make women interested in this material as well.”

PETRO PROFILE: A Decade of Energy Issues and Views from Mark Stansberry

The spring of 2024 marks the 10th anniversary of this column. I want to thank Emmanuel Sullivan, publisher of OILMAN Magazine, Editor-in-Chief Rebecca Ponton, and all those associated with the magazine for their support and encouragement, as well as my appreciation to all the readers of my column throughout the years and to those readers who have provided input, comments and suggestions.

During this decade of time, I was fortunate to write two additional books and a monograph entitled “America Needs America’s Energy and Its Natural Resources.” The documentary film, Sherwood Forest: Top Secret, was released in 2022 and received a Heartland Emmy nomination in 2023. It was an honor to serve as a producer of the film. My appreciation to all those who supported and encouraged us and viewed the film along the way.

Over the past decade, I also had the opportunity to host four different podcasts with an emphasis on the podcast: National Energy Talk and the Energy Fellows. My OILMAN column has been an important part of my efforts in advocating for energy education, issues and views.

My appreciation to all those who have invited me to be a speaker at their events in the last 10 years, including Louisiana Oil and Gas Association Annual Conference, National Association of Royalty Owners Conventions (NARO) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Professional Data Management Association Annual Conference in Houston, Texas, and events in other cities, including Denver, Colorado, Shreveport Wildcatters Association, and other associations and events.

EMERGING ENERGIES: Dr. Loren Scott Explains Louisiana’s Carbon Primacy Power

Dr. Loren Scott joined Jason Spiess to discuss the EPA’s decision to award Louisiana the power to approve carbon capture projects.

Louisiana is the third state—after North Dakota and Wyoming—given primary authority by EPA to issue permits for the Class VI wells used in carbon capture and sequestration (CCS). North Dakota approved its fourth well permit last spring, and an ethanol producer is already capturing and storing carbon there.

Texas, West Virginia, and Arizona all have similar requests into EPA. The federal agency took 4 years to approve Louisiana’s bid for primacy.

Proponents say giving more states primary authority to issue permits will accelerate approval of new projects essential to reduce CO2.

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2023 fueled additional interest. Companies can receive a tax credit up to $85/ton to capture and permanently store carbon about a mile below the earth’s surface.

SHARE YOUR SUSTAINABLE STORY: Jeff Bridges: We’re All In This Together

Reaching the young boy, who had been swept into the churning water from his perch on the rocky ledge of the cave he had been exploring, the man grabs him around the waist and pulls the boy from beneath the water swirling forcefully around them as high tide comes in. Setting him atop a rock jutting out from the rising tide, the man asks with a mixture of relief and concern, “How are you, Davey boy?”

The dramatic rescue scene, replete with orchestra music crescendoing in the background, involves real-life father and son, Lloyd and Jeff Bridges, and is from the elder Bridges’ 1958 hit television show, Sea Hunt, in an episode from the first season called The Lost Ones.

The younger Bridges, then eight, made his acting debut at the age of two in a film with his mother, Dorothy, who was an actress and poet. (His older brother, Beau, also would appear in a few of the 155 episodes of Sea Hunt, which ran for four years, and can still be seen online in the original black and white cinematography.)

TODAY IN ENERGY NEWS BRIEFS
Mexico Presidential Frontrunner Plans to Spend Billions on RE, Gas Power

Mexico’s leading presidential candidate would spend around $13.6 billion to boost her country’s use of renewable energy while still adding gas-burning power plants, according to a plan she presented to business leaders.

The plan from frontrunner Claudia Sheinbaum would increase wind and solar power generation, modernize hydroelectric stations and add about 3,850 kilometers (2392 miles) of transmission lines. It would represent a significant shift from the policies of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who prioritized backing state oil company Petroleos Mexicanos rather than renewable power.

Sheinbaum, who is leading opposition candidate Xochitl Galvez by a wide margin in polls ahead of the June 2 election, has vowed to continue supporting Pemex while also pushing the nation toward clean energy. Her plan outlined Monday at an event in Mexico City would add about 13.7 gigawatts of electricity to the existing grid by 2030, she said. In the US, a gigawatt can power about 750,000 homes.

TotalEnergies expects stable oil and gas output in first quarter despite oil sands exit

TotalEnergies expects its oil and gas production for the first quarter of 2024 to be stable, despite selling its oil sands interests in Canada late last year.

There were no big surprises in the supermajor's latest trading update on Tuesday morning – ahead of its first-quarter results being released on 26 April – with the company noting hydrocarbon production is expected to come in above 2.45 million barrels of oil equivalent per day.

Output is holding steady despite the oil sands disposal, helped by growth in liquefied natural gas production and the startups of Mero 2 in Brazil and the Akpo West development in Nigeria.

This output number looks to align with the market consensus of about 2.472 million boepd.

Integrated power results, said the company, are set to be higher quarter-on-quarter, due to business growth, with downstream results due to benefit from an increase in refining margins because refinery utilisation levels in the first quarter were “relatively stable” compared to the prior quarter.

Native Alaskan Group Slams Biden Admin's Plans to Cancel Oil, Gas Leases: 'Blindsided'

An indigenous Alaskan organization on Thursday denounced the Biden administration’s plans to cancel oil and gas leases in the state’s northernmost borough.

The Voice of Arctic Iñupiat (VOICE) criticized a reported decision by the Department of the Interior (DIO) to limit development on Alaska’s National Petroleum Reserve (NPR-A).

DIO proposed in September restricting oil and gas development in sensitive areas while prohibiting new leases in more than 40% of NPR-A. VOICE argued industrial projects in Alaska’s northernmost borough are essential to Iñupiat communities given funds gained by the state through taxation of resource development infrastructure.

The funding funnels into services like health clinics, modern water and sewer systems, schools and wildlife management, according to the organization.

US House votes to sanction China’s purchase of Iranian oil

The US House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed legislation Monday aimed at countering China’s purchase of Iranian crude oil as part of a package of bills being brought to the floor in response to Iran’s attack on Israel, Bloomberg reported.

The legislation was approved by a 383-11 vote, surpassing the requisite number needed to overcome a presidential veto. The legislation moves to the Senate where it faces an uncertain fate.

The legislation, H.R. 5923, Iran-China Energy Sanctions Act of 2023, would expand secondary sanctions against Iran to cover all transactions between Chinese financial institutions and sanctioned Iranian banks used to purchase of petroleum and petroleum products, according to a summary of the bill.  The legislation also requires the US to make a determination annually whether Chinese financial institutions have engaged in sanctionable conduct.

Op/Ed: Carbon Storage: Another Elitist Grifting Scheme from Another Scranton Politician

Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy, a supposed Republican, is from Scranton and, just like its other famous pol, he's mostly interested in passing out political favors but this one is double-trouble.

HB 50/SB 49 – Carbon Storage, introduced by Dunleavy at the beginning of the 33rd session (2023–2024), is coupled with a carbon offset bill, HB 49/SB 48. “The package consists of two pieces of legislation focusing on a carbon offset program; and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) program”

The carbon offset legislation (“tree bill”) passed last session despite unanimous public testimony in opposition. The public process leaves much to be desired as the Senate Finance Committee (see this video) decided there were better things to do than listen to what citizens had to say last year.
