NEWSMAKER INTERVIEW sponsored by U.S. Energy Media: Lori Hinz, reporter for BEK News, gives a weekly update from the research on her daily feature on Capturing America’s Heartland: CO2 Pipeline on Townsquare Media SuperTalk 1270AM’s Talk of the Town with host Steve Bakken.

This week the two discuss a recent North Dakota Public Service Commission hearing scheduled for Summit Carbon Solutions’ Midwest Express Carbon Pipeline Project where North Dakota is the terminus for the carbon storage.

Hinz was at the meeting, taking notes and reports for her news content partners.

“I watched the entire thing,” Hinz said. “I was there for the entire nine hours of the Public Service Commission meeting.”

WOMEN IN ENERGY sponsored by The OilWoman Magazine: Engineering High-Tech Solutions, One Step at a Time

For someone who had her head in the clouds for much of her college career – interning for NASA and SpaceX – Hahna Alexander now has her feet planted firmly on the ground.

What started as a senior design project in a mechanical engineering class at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) evolved into the start-up, SolePower, Inc., focusing on wearable electronics – specifically, a smart boot – that provide lighting and power generation, and has since survived one failed incarnation and a new focus. Through it all, Alexander has persisted.

“From my perspective, the power generation was particularly interesting because my phone was always dead so, on a personal note, that was the initiation of my interest in the technology. My classmate and co-founder was also quite interested in the lighting capability for walking home alone off-campus.”

Carbon Capture A new way to reduce CO2 emissions

SHARE YOUR SUSTAINABLE STORY sponsored by The Industrial Forest: Carbon Capture: A New Way to Reduce CO2 Emissions

In the global energy industry, 321 million tons of CO2 were emitted in the past year. The rise in greenhouse gas emissions in the past century is taking a toll on the environment. Twenty years from now, we will create irreversible damage to the earth at this emission rate.

The rate of carbon emissions is increasing per year. Emissions from oil increased by almost 2% in the last year. While fossil fuels are the largest contributor to carbon emissions, the oil and gas industry is responsible for about 15%. Around 57 producers account for 80% of CO2 emissions in the oil and gas industry. CO2 sensors can detect the amount of CO2 in the surroundings, which can be used to collect data and tally the area around offshore and onshore sites.

In 2006, he was named president and chief operating officer of ONEOK Partners, the master limited partnership that contains the midstream natural gas and natural gas liquids businesses. He was elected chief executive officer of ONEOK and president and chief executive officer of ONEOK Partners in January 2007, becoming chairman of ONEOK Partners later that year. In January 2010, he became president of ONEOK; and in May 2011, he became chairman.

ENERGY INFLUENCER sponsored by BCK9 Services: Trisha Curtis, President and CEO, PetroNerds

The Fed interest rate decision and Jerome Powell’s speech tomorrow has the market anxious and volatile. Stocks are down and oil prices are sitting below $82/barrel.

Starbucks was down 10 percent as traffic into stores declined in the U.S. and sales declined further in China. Starbucks is an expensive treat for most people and a discretionary spending item that could be a tell tell for a weaker consumer smacked by inflation at the grocery store, rising electricity prices and utility bills, and rising gasoline prices.

Three hotter than excepted inflation reads this year has put the Fed in the hot seat. Powell needs to roll back his dovish talk and tell the street clearly they are not cutting rates anytime soon.

A chipotle salad, from Chipotle, apparently costs $36 in California after minimum wage hikes went through (heard on Bloomberg Surveillance).

Housing prices are increasing, not decreasing, despite nearly 8 percent mortgages. Recent buyers might have been hoping to refinance with a bet the Fed would lower rates soon….risky bet.

Houthis continue to attack ships with any linkage to Israel or countries that support Israel. Chinese and Russian ships are excluded in these assaults. Shipments continue to be rerouted around Africa instead of through the Red Sea, driving up shipping costs, fuel costs, and overall adding risk and inflationary pressure to the movement of goods.

EMERGING ENERGIES sponsored by The Carbon Conversation: U.S. Energy-Related CO2 Emissions Decreased by 3% in 2023

Based on analysis in the most recent U.S. Energy-Related Carbon Dioxide Emissions report, U.S. energy-related CO2 emissions decreased by 3%, about 134 million metric tons (MMmt), in 2023.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), more than 80% of the emissions reductions occurred in the electric power sector, caused largely by decreased coal-fired electricity generation, displaced by increased generation from solar and natural gas. Electric power sector emissions decreased to about 1,425 MMmt in 2023, about 7% less than in 2022.
