New Satellite Designed to Track Oil and Gas Methane
A team of scientists and environmentalists have launched a satellite into space in order to hunt for "planet-heating methane emissions".
MethaneSAT, a satellite backed by Alphabet Inc's Google and the Environmental Defense Fund to fight “global warming”, launched on March 4, 2024.
Traveling pole-to-pole in under 100 minutes, MethaneSAT circles the globe, scanning for climate pollution that was previously invisible.
The Environmental Defense Fund is tracking the progress of this methane detecting satellite as it embarks on its mission to “cut climate pollution”.
Circling the Earth 15 times a day, MethaneSAT is expected to soon begin measuring changes in methane concentrations as small as three parts per billion.
